Toronto FC star Sebastian Giovinco called up by Italy for Euro qualifiers

TORONTO – Toronto FC forward Sebastian Giovinco has been called up by Italy for Euro 2016 qualifying matches against Azerbaijan and Norway later this month.

Giovinco was summoned for games last month against Malta and Bulgaria but had to pull out with an adductor injury.

Giovinco entered the day second in goal-scoring (20) and first in assists (15) in Major League Soccer. His combined total of 35 goals and assists is a league record.

The five-foot-four 135-pound forward has one goal in 21 appearances for the Italian national team.

Italy travels to Azerbaijan on Oct. 10 before hosting Norway on Oct. 13 in Rome. Italy currently leads Group H with 18 points, two ahead of Norway.

Giovinco would likely just miss one game with Toronto FC. The MLS club has a bye next week and doesn’t play again until Oct. 14, when it hosts the New York Red Bulls.
