Rae proud of stint as interim leader, not sure he’ll seek re-election
OTTAWA – Bob Rae is looking forward to being a “regular” MP again once his two-year stint as interim Liberal leader ends in April.
But he’s not sure he wants to run for re-election in 2015.
In a year-end interview with The Canadian Press, the 64-year-old admits he wishes he’d won the 2006 Liberal leadership contest.
But he says he has no regrets about deciding not to plunge into the current contest, which will choose a permanent new leader in April.
Rae says he’s “quite happy” with the vital role he’s been able to play as interim leader: keeping the party in the game after being reduced to a third-party rump in the 2011 election.
He says whether he’ll seek re-election will depend, in part, on what the new leader wants him to do.
