Man sentenced to three months in prison for inappropriately touching niece

KAMLOOPS – A man convicted of inappropriately touching his niece over a span of four months will spend 90 days in jail and have to register as a sex offender.

The Kamloops man, who cannot be named due to a court ordered publication ban, pleaded guilty to sexual assault and sexual interference of a person under 16 in Kamloops Provincial Court today, Aug. 11.

The accused received the minimum sentence for sexual abuse involving children.

"(This man) breached the family trust," Judge Christopher Cleaveley told the court.

Court heard that the man inappropriately touched his 15-year-old niece at least 10 times over the course of four months, from December 2015 to April of this year.

Defence lawyer Christopher Soll told the court that the accused works in pipeline construction in northern Alberta.

Cleaveley imposed a no contact order between the accused and his niece. Along with the jail sentence, the man will have to register as a sex offender for 10 years and be on probation for 15 months after his release.
