TORONTO – York 9 FC has signed attacking midfielder Mateo Hernandez from Argentina’s Club Atletico Colon.
The 22-year-old Argentine, who can operate centrally or on either flank, signed for the 2021 Canadian Premier League season, with further options for 2022 and 2023.
He made seven first-team appearances for Colon last year and played in in the Copa Sudamericana.
“Since early June, I’ve been in discussions with Mateo’s representative about bringing him to our club,” York 9 managing consultant Angus McNab said in a statement.
“He is a player who can play on both wings and also as a creative attacking midfielder. One of the most impressive things is his ability to see a line-breaking pass and release others and that’s something we certainly needed to add to the group.”
Hernandez joins German striker Julian Ulbricht as York 9’s other major off-season recruit.
