Evacuation ends at CBC after military shell found to be inert
TORONTO – The CBC building in downtown Toronto was briefly evacuated Friday afternoon after a military artifact was found.
Toronto police Const. Victor Kwong said they were called just after 1:30 p.m. to investigate a military shell that was donated to the broadcaster’s archive.
Police and military bomb technicians were called in and determined the shell was inert.
People were allowed back into the building around 3 p.m. and nearby roads were to reopen shortly afterward.
The CBC apologized for any disruption in its coverage as a result of the evacuation, which forced the company to broadcast from Ottawa instead.
“We apologize for transmission issues over television, radio and online due to the ongoing police investigation at our headquarters,” CBC Toronto tweeted.
CBC parliamentary reporter Rosemary Barton was called to fill in as anchor during the evacuation.
“So, 15 minutes ago, wearing no make-up. Now hosting CBCNN,” she tweeted.
