Thomas Ades’ “The Exterminating Angel” will have its world premiere at the Salzburg Festival on July 28.
Commissioned by the festival in 2011, the opera is based on Luis Bunuel’s 1962 film. The cast includes Anne Sofie von Otter, Eric Halfvarson, Thomas Allen and John Tomlinson.
Ades will conduct and librettist Tom Cairns will direct the production, which has sets and costumes by Hildegard Bechtler and lighting by Jon Clark. There will be three additional performances through Aug. 8.
The opera is scheduled to be produced at London’s Royal Opera in spring 2017 and at New York’s Metropolitan Opera during fall 2017. The Royal Danish Theatre also is a co-producer. This will be Ades’ third opera, following “Powder Her Face” and “The Tempest.”
The festival is announcing its 2016 schedule at a series of news conferences around the world this week and next.
