Better late than never: Canada’s Messing expected to arrive in Beijing on Monday

BEIJING – Canadian figure skater Keegan Messing is expected to arrive at the Beijing Olympics on Monday, a day before the men’s short programs.

The reigning Canadian champion has been stuck in Vancouver since testing positive for COVID-19 prior to the team’s flight to Beijing.

Messing, a 30-year-old who lives in Girdwood, Alaska, needed four negative tests before getting the green light.

He flew to Montreal on Friday evening for one final COVID-19 test and then was scheduled to fly from there to Beijing.

Messing’s positive test cost him competing in the team event.

Canada was in sixth place after three of the four short programs on Friday.
