2 more charged with murder in shooting of California police officer

DOWNEY, Calif. – Two more people have been charged with murder in the shooting death of a Southern California police officer who was sitting in his car in a public parking lot next to his department’s headquarters.

Eighteen-year-old Steven Knott and 21-year-old Jeremy Alvarez were charged Monday with one count of special-circumstance murder and one count of attempted second-degree robbery. Sixteen-year-old Abel Diaz faces the same charges.

All three also face gang allegations.

The group’s arraignments were postponed from Monday until Dec. 17.

It’s unclear whether they have obtained attorneys.

If convicted, Knott and Alvarez could face the death penalty. Because of his age, Diaz faces up to life in prison if convicted.

Twenty-nine-year-old Officer Ricardo “Ricky” Galvez was shot to death near the Downey Police Department on Wednesday.
