Sandra now tropical storm in the eastern Pacific off Mexican coast; forecast to further weaken

MIAMI – Tropical Storm Sandra is weakening as it approaches Mexico’s Pacific coast.

The storm’s maximum sustained winds decreased early Saturday to 50 mph (85 kph).

The U.S. National Hurricane Center says Sandra could be a tropical depression before making landfall late Saturday.

Sandra is centred about 170 miles (270 kms) west of Las Islas Marias, Mexico, and is moving north at 2 mph (3 kph).

A tropical storm warning is in effect for Las Islas Marias, which will be affected for the next several hours, and for the area from Altata to San Blas.
