Vancouver university cancels Thursday classes after student assaulted

VANCOUVER – The Emily Carr University of Art and Design in Vancouver has cancelled classes for Thursday following an on-campus assault.

Police say a male student was stabbed by another on Wednesday afternoon and the university said in a statement that the unidentified victim was recovering.

The university also said as police investigate the incident, classes were cancelled “in order to deal with this situation in a systematic way.”

Emily Carr University added that the school strives to “provide a safe environment for all students, faculty and staff” and noted there have been no violent incidents on campus in recent history.

The university website says there were 2,002 full-time students in graduate and undergraduate programs at the school in the 2014-15 academic year and 1,273 full- and part-time students in certificate and continuing studies programs.
