HALIFAX – Five things to know about the Trans Canada Trail:

What is it? One of the world’s longest networks of multi-use recreational trails, the Trans Canada Trail will stretch nearly 24,000 kilometres from the Atlantic to the Pacific and the Arctic oceans, linking Canadians in nearly 1,000 communities.

How much has been connected? To date, just over 18,000 kilometres are operational, which is 80 per cent of the proposed route.

Who pays for it? Money comes from corporations, foundations and all levels of government. The federal government has provided more than $35 million so far.

How can one donate to the project? Visit www.tctrail.ca and click on “Donate.” The federal government is matching 50 cents of every dollar donated to the trail.

What is the completion rate in each province by percentage? Newfoundland and Labrador: 100; Prince Edward Island: 100; New Brunswick: 61; Nova Scotia: 38; Quebec: 97; Ontario: 73; Manitoba: 92; Saskatchewan: 71; Alberta: 59; British Columbia: 80; Territories: 99.
