Israeli police: Palestinian car attacker shot dead

JERUSALEM – Israeli police say their forces have shot dead a Palestinian who tried to ram his car into them in east Jerusalem.

Police spokeswoman Luba Samri says the officers were concluding a patrol in the Shuafat refugee camp Monday when a vehicle sped toward them and tried to run them over. After warning the vehicle to stop, she said the forces opened fire and killed the driver. A passenger in the vehicle was lightly wounded.

Since September, Palestinians have killed 34 Israelis and two visiting Americans in attacks. Some 208 Palestinians have been killed in that time, most of them identified as attackers by Israel.

Israel blames the violence on a campaign of incitement by Palestinian political and religious leaders. The Palestinians say it stems from frustration over decades of occupation.
