The Latest: 5 bodies found among plane wreckage in orchard near Bakersfield, California

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The latest on a small-plane crash that killed five people near Bakersfield, California (all times local):

11:10 a.m.

Authorities say they found five bodies among the wreckage of a plane that crashed in central California after sending a mayday call and disappearing from radar.

Kern County sheriff’s Sgt. Mark King said Sunday that the bodies have not been identified yet.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor says searchers located the debris in an orchard southwest of Bakersfield on Saturday evening.

The single-engine Piper PA32 was heading from San Jose to Las Vegas and was last detected an estimated 10 miles south of Bakersfield.

Gregor says aviation investigators are at the crash site.
