Fantino ducks Haiti queries as Canadians honoured for bravery during 2010 quake

MONTREAL – Thirteen police officers and a member of the Canadian Forces are being honoured for their bravery while serving on the ground during the earthquake in Haiti.

A ceremony has been held in Montreal to pay tribute to the men nearly three years to the day the massive earthquake devastated the Caribbean country.

International Co-operation Minister Julian Fantino attended today’s event but, contrary to a media advisory, did not field questions from reporters.

The minister has been under heavy fire in recent days for saying Canada would freeze aid for new projects in Haiti.

Fantino said last week he was disappointed by the lack of progress in the country and wanted to find a better way to help Haiti’s reconstruction.

Those comments earned him rebukes from the U.S. State Department and the United Nations this week.

The third anniversary of the earthquake is Saturday.
