Oland asks Supreme Court of Canada to hear bail case
SAINT JOHN, N.B. – Lawyers for convicted murderer Dennis Oland are asking Canada’s highest court to hear the New Brunswick man’s bid to be granted bail.
They issued a brief statement Friday saying they have asked the Supreme Court of Canada to hear the case, something the high court is not obliged to do.
Oland received a life prison sentence this year after being convicted of second-degree murder in the death of his father, prominent New Brunswick businessman Richard Oland.
Oland was found dead in his Saint John office in July 2011, the victim of a beating during which he suffered 45 blows to his head, neck and hands.
His son is appealing his conviction and asked the New Brunswick courts to grant him bail while the appeal is being prepared, but his request was rejected.
No person convicted of murder has ever been granted bail in New Brunswick.
The Oland family is best known for founding Moosehead Breweries.
