GRAND FORKS, B.C. – Cold-water recovery crews are searching a river in southeastern British Columbia after police witnessed a man disappear under the ice.
RCMP responded to reports of a man falling into the Kettle River, just east of Grand Forks, on Wednesday afternoon.
Officers using binoculars spotted the man clinging to the edge of the ice but they were unable to reach him before he lost his grip and was swept under.
Police say they don’t know why the man was on the partially frozen river but suspect he may have been trying to take a shortcut to the other side.
The man’s identity has not been determined.
Search-and-rescue crews from Nelson are helping with the recovery.
