Mexico volcano still active, evacuation zone holds

MEXICO CITY – Mexican authorities say hundreds of people evacuated from their homes over the weekend must remain in shelters as eruptions continue at the Colima volcano.

The national civil defence office said Monday that the residents of two communities in Colima state and one in Jalisco state would be prevented from returning home for at least another 24 hours. It said the volcano continues to be highly active, with a large plume of vapour and ash visible Monday.

Authorities established an exclusion zone of about 7 miles (12 kilometres) in Colima and nearly 5 miles (7.5 kilometres) in Jalisco. The zones encompass Juan Barragan, La Becerra and Yerbabuena.

Also known as the Volcano of Fire, the 12,533-foot (3,820-meter) volcano is 430 miles (690 kilometres) west of Mexico City.
