Saskatchewan First Nation puts in goods and services tax; started in December
BROADVIEW, Sask. – A First Nation in Saskatchewan has introduced a goods and services tax.
The Kahkewistahaw First Nation calls it a community improvement fee, and it is being administered by the Canada Revenue Agency.
The band says in a release that anyone who acquires a taxable supply of goods or services on reserve lands is required to pay the fee.
The rate is five per cent, the same as the federal GST.
Chief Louis Taypotat says it’s hoped the funds generated by the fee will benefit the community and band members.
The tax started being applied on Dec. 11.
