Spike belt ends car chase

A West Kelowna woman who drove away from a road check Saturday night will face charges.

The 32-year-old was directed to pull over around 9 p.m. by Kelowna RCMP and Central Okanagan Traffic Services on Sexsmith Road near Valley Road, but refused to provide officers with her driver's licence. She then took off.

Police followed with lights flashing. The chase stayed within the speed limit but the woman evaded two different stops by navigating the ditch area on Sexmith Road and driving over the median at Sexsmith and Highway 97 while turning left onto the highway.

Officers laid a spike belt across Highway 97 north near Beaver Lake Road causing all four tires on the Mazda to deflate, stopping the vehicle. The driver refused to exit and she was then removed without injury.

The woman remains in custody facing possible criminal charges of Flight From Police and Obstruction. She was also issued a ticket for Driving Without a Driver's Licence. She is expected to appear in court Dec. 13.
