BALTIMORE – The Houston Dash selected Canadian international forward Janine Beckie eighth overall in Friday’s National Women’s Soccer League draft.
The 21-year-old is Texas Tech’s all-time leading scorer with 57 career goals. She scored 14 of those in 2015.
The three-time All-American will join Canadian teammate Lauren Sesselmann in Houston.
“Thank you to @CoachWaldrum and the @HoustonDash for taking a chance on me, I’m incredibly excited to join the team!” Beckie tweeted.
Beckie was born in Colorado to Canadian parents (Regina and Davidson, Sask.). She has three goals in nine appearances for Canada.
The Portland Thorns took defender/midfielder Emily Sonnett of the University of Virginia first overall. Sky Blue FC then chose Penn State midfielder Raquel Rodriguez, winner of the 2015 MAC Hermann Trophy as the top NCAA female player, and the Boston Breakers selected Florida defender Christen Westphal.
