CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Santo Condorelli led Canadian Olympic swimming team nominees to four medals on Friday with gold in the men’s 100-metre butterfly at the fifth stop on the Pro Swim Series circuit.
Condorelli, from Kenora, Ont., neared an eight-year-old Canadian record, clocking 52.53 seconds to edge American swimmers Tim Phillips (52.83) and Matthew Josa (53.43).
“I think I could have gotten the record if I hadn’t taken an extra stroke at the end,” said Condorelli.
“It was a satisfying race for me. I’m working on specific things at this event and trying to fine tune my performances in preparing for the Olympics.”
Taylor Ruck, Kylie Masse and Penny Oleksiak all collected silver medals.
In the women’s 200 freestyle, Leah Smith of the U.S. took the gold in 1:57.26 with the 15-year-old Ruck, based in Arizona, second in 1:58.84. Siobhan Haughey of Hong Kong was third in 1:58.90.
Masse, of LaSalle, Ont., won her silver medal in the 50 backstroke in 28.11, just behind Ali DeLoof of the U.S. (28.03). Dominique Bouchard of North Bay, Ont., was fifth in 28.87.
Toronto’s Oleksiak, also 15, was runner-up in the 100 butterfly in 58.25 with four-time Olympic champion Dana Vollmer of the U.S. taking gold in 57.23. American Kelsi Worrell was third in 58.37.
