China’s January trade soars; exports up 25 per cent, imports 28 per cent

BEIJING, China – China’s trade growth surged in January, boosted by the traditional Lunar New Year.

Data reported today showed exports rose 25 per cent, accelerating from December’s 14.1 per cent. Imports soared 28 per cent, more than quadruple the previous month’s 6 per cent growth.

Trade got a boost from the traditional Lunar New Year. Last year, the holiday took place in January, leaving fewer work days and boosting this year’s figures by comparison.

This year, the holiday takes place in February, so companies rushed to complete import and export orders before shutting for up to two weeks.
