Saskatchewan to establish Creative Industries agency after film tax cut outcry

REGINA – The Saskatchewan government says a new agency will help support the film industry after cuts last year.

Culture Minister Kevin Doherty says legislation is to be introduced in the spring to establish Creative Saskatchewan.

The province says the agency will work with creative organizations and, in the case of the film industry, also support production.

A $1-million transition fund is to back projects until Creative Saskatchewan is launched later this year.

The province faced much hue and cry when it cut a film employment tax credit in the budget last March.

The Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce said the move kicked the film industry out at the knees and several production companies have since left the province.
