TORONTO – Canada’s dollar and its largest stock market were up significantly in the early minutes of Thursday’s trading day.
The loonie rose above 73 cents US for the first time this year, climbing by 0.58 to 73.19 cents US at 9:30 a.m. ET.
Meanwhile the Toronto Stock Exchange’s S&P/TSX Composite index was up 101.35 points at 12,694.37 — contrasting with declines seen at its counterpart in New York
The Dow Jones Industrials average was down 31.91 points at 16,304.75, the broader S&P 500 index declined 7.43 points to 1,905.10 and the Nasdaq 100 lost 35.16 points to 4,136.81.
On the commodity markets, the April gold contract rose $14.60 to US$1,559.00 an ounce and the March crude contract was up $1.04 at US$33.32 per barrel.
