Political heavyweights set to battle for Liberal nod in Vancouver-False Creek

VANCOUVER – Two of Vancouver’s political veterans are preparing to battle for the provincial Liberal nomination in Vancouver-False Creek.

Liberal MLA Mary McNeil is not running again and former two-term Liberal Lorne Mayencourt hopes to return to the job he quit before the 2009 provincial election.

He was replaced by McNeil after stepping down to run for the federal Conservatives in an unsuccessful bid to unseat Vancouver-Centre Liberal MP Hedy Fry.

Mayencourt will be challenged by former Vancouver mayor Sam Sullivan, who says he has signed up 300 new members to support his drive to return to elected politics.

Sullivan and Premier Christy Clark are no strangers, since Sullivan defeated Clark to capture the NPA nomination and win Vancouver’s 2005 mayoral race, serving for a single term.

The Vancouver-False Creek nomination meeting begins at 4 p.m. at the Century Plaza Hotel in downtown Vancouver, with results expected about four hours later.
