Judge orders municipal politician from B.C. to pay fine for breaching tax laws

VERNON, B.C. – A veteran politician from B.C.’s north Okanagan has been ordered to pay $2,000 for breaching federal tax laws.

A judge has found Coun. Patrick Nicol of Vernon, B.C., guilty of two counts of failing to comply with the Income Tax Act.

Court documents say Nicol didn’t file a completed income tax return in 2007 and 2008, including a statement of income and expenses for each business activity as demanded.

Nicol says he may appeal the ruling and will continue with his political duties because they had nothing to do with the charges.

Nicol has been elected to Vernon city council nine times and currently chairs the Regional District of North Okanagan.

According to his profile on the city’s website, Nicol has a business background, worked for a broadcast company for 42 years, and serves the community in several honorary and volunteer roles. (CKIZ/The Canadian Press)
