Prairie storm prompts Alberta RCMP to warn motorists to find accommodations

FORT MACLEOD, Alta. – Mounties in southern Alberta are advising highway travellers to find the nearest town and sit tight until a winter storm passes.

RCMP in Fort Macleod, which is south of Calgary, say many highways in southern Alberta are being closed down.

They say anyone who are on a highway should find accommodations in the nearest town or find a safe place to be off the main roadways.

Winter storm and blowing snow warnings remain in effect across the southern portions of Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

Police say that anyone stranded in their vehicles in Alberta should call 911, but they say vehicles that have been in accidents or become stuck in ditches won’t be towed because it isn’t safe.

RCMP say emergency accommodations will be set up in Fort Macleod at the town’s arena or community centre.
