NDP to introduce new law allowing under-18 youth to get on voters’ list

VANCOUVER – NDP Leader Adrian Dix says he will introduce a new law that would allow youth under age 18 to get on the B.C. voters’ list.

Dix made the announcement to high school students at a Vancouver public library and says he’ll introduce the legislation on Monday.

He says his aim is to encourage more young people to vote when they turn 18.

Dix says people between ages 18 and 25 are the least likely demographic to cast a ballot during elections.

Angus Reid pollster Mario Canseco says lowering the registration age won’t necessarily have an effect on voter turnout.

But he says it will help the New Democrats by showing their interest in younger voters.
