The Latest: Albuquerque police find no evidence of shooter

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Latest on police activity at Albuquerque City Hall (all times local):

7:45 p.m.

Albuquerque police are conducting a floor-by-floor of City Hall after getting reports about a possible shooter and a hostage situation, but authorities say there’s no evidence there were ever any shots fired.

Police spokesman Tanner Tixier told reporters Monday evening that officers had detained a man who was believed to be “the initiator” of the incident that led employees to call 911.

Tixier said the man had previous contact with the police department’s crisis intervention unit and was known to have issues.

Employees had reported that a man was running up and down the halls yelling that there was a shooter in the building.

Police believe the situation may have been the result of a hoax, but they were not taking any chances. The search of City Hall was expected to take a couple of hours.

Employees were escorted away from the building by officers in tactical gear. No injuries were reported.

Police SWAT officers are searching Albuquerque’s City Hall after unconfirmed reports of a possible active shooter and hostage situation in the building.

Officers had surrounded Civic Plaza and City Hall around 6 p.m. Monday.

Police say a man was detained around 6:30 p.m. and was being questioned about the incident.

Police spokesman Tanner Tixier says there’s no evidence that shots were fired or that there was an active shooter in the building, which houses both city and county government offices.

But he says police were still investigating reports of a possible hostage situation.

Officers were working to clear Civic Plaza.

Albuquerque police Chief Gorden Eden is at the scene along with Bernalillo County Sheriff Manny Gonzales.
