Canada’s Bizier won’t back off in welterweight title clash with champion Brook
SHEFFIELD, England – Kevin Bizier knows he’s a longshot to win the world welterweight boxing title but he plans to put everything on the line against champion Kell Brook.
Bizier (25-2-0), from Quebec City, takes on Brook (35-0-0) in the Briton’s hometown of Sheffield, England on Saturday. At stake is the International Boxing Federation title Brook won from Shawn Porter in Carson, Calif., in 2014.
“I will give everything in the ring for this fight,” Bizier told the website of Brook’s promoter, Matchroom Boxing. “I don’t want to regret anything. I don’t want to leave that ring knowing I didn’t give it all when fighting for a world title.
“I’ll have to apply constant pressure on him and get in his face.”
Brook, 29, is looking forward to facing an opponent who won’t be backing away.
“I’m desperate for an old-fashioned war,” he said at a news conference Thursday. “I know Bizier is a strong come-forward fighter.”
Bizier, 31, became the mandatory challenger when he stopped Frederik Lawson in 10 rounds in Miami on Nov. 7. It will be the second time Brook defends his title against a Canadian, having stopped JoJo Dan of Montreal in four rounds last March.
Bizier’s only two losses were by close decisions to Dan in Quebec City in 2013 and 2014.
Brook wants to win in convincing fashion to open doors to lucrative bouts against the world’s top welterweights. The division includes stars Manny Pacquiao, Amir Khan and Tim Bradley.
“I need to go out there and show everyone why I’m the champion,” said Brook. “I believe I’m the best welterweight on the planet.”
