Matthews to play for United States at world championship

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Auston Matthews is the first player to be named by USA Hockey to the U.S. roster for the upcoming world hockey championship in Russia.

The 18-year-old projected first overall NHL draft pick played for the U.S. world junior team in Helsinki and had 11 points in seven games.

The Scottsdale, Arizona, native spent this season playing for Zurich of the Swiss league. Playing against men, Matthews had 24 goals and 22 assists in 36 games.

The U.S. opens the world championship May 6 against Canada in St. Petersburg.
