Canadians in South Korea unphased by Pyongyang’s threat of nuclear war

TORONTO – North Korea’s latest threat of a missile attack against its southern neighbour is not rattling Canadians living and working in South Korea.

Canadian expats say Pyongyang’s war talk is nothing new and there’s no reason to be alarmed.

They say they’re taking their cues from the locals, who appear unphased by North Korea’s suggestion the two countries are on the verge of a nuclear war.

Several agencies who recruit Canadians to teach English in South Korea say they’ve been asked about the tensions by current and prospective teachers, but say so far it’s been business as usual.

Ottawa isn’t advising against travel to South Korea, though it urges tourists to be vigilant in case the situation worsens.

Consular officials say there are more than 20,000 Canadians living in South Korea, including more than 5,000 English teachers.
