Wynne hints that she won’t hike property taxes to fund transit in Toronto area

TORONTO – Premier Kathleen Wynne still won’t say how she’ll raise $2 billion annually to improve transit, but is strongly hinting that she won’t hike property taxes to do it.

In an interview with The Canadian Press, Wynne says the property tax base in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area can’t pay for all of the transit infrastructure that’s needed in the region.

Wynne says there needs to be a dedicated revenue stream other than property taxes.

Municipal politicians outside Toronto are concerned about a tax hike to pay for improvements to services their residents don’t use.

Wynne says some people in those areas do travel in the GTHA, but there needs to be money for roads and bridges in other parts of the province.

She says people are frustrated with congestion, and she’s not afraid to spend some political capital to get the region moving again.
