Panel recommends Navy officer in Conn. who faked death to end affair be honourably discharged
GROTON, Conn. – A panel of officers has recommended that a former submarine commander who faked his death to end an extramarital affair be honourably discharged from the Navy.
The three officers made the recommendation about Navy Cmdr. Michael P. Ward II after a daylong hearing Friday at the Naval Submarine Base in Groton.
The board also recommended Ward retain his rank. Their decision goes to the secretary of the Navy for approval or rejection within 90 days.
A Navy investigation found that Ward sent his mistress in Virginia an email from a fictitious person named Bob in July, saying Ward had died unexpectedly. Ward says he accept “full and total accountability” for his behaviour.
A lieutenant acting as prosecutor says there’s no place in the Navy for a man of Ward’s character.
