Lawyer argues police officer who arrested Edmonton MP should not be believed

EDMONTON – A lawyer says a police officer who arrested an Edmonton MP has — quote — “assassinated” the politician’s character and should not be believed.

Dino Bottos has told a judge to trust Peter Goldring’s version of his 2011 arrest for refusing to give a breath sample.

Goldring, who is 68, has pleaded not guilty and lawyers are making final arguments at his trial.

Goldring admits he had a quick beer at a pub before police pulled him over in his pickup truck on Edmonton’s north side.

He says police refused his request for a lawyer and prematurely placed him under arrest before demanding the breath sample.

Police officers have testified they performed the arrest by the book and Goldring was snarky and tried to negotiate his way out.
