Construction of John Hindle Drive extension to UBCO to begin this spring

KELOWNA – The construction of a new route to UBC Okanagan is one step closer.

The province has tendered the John Hindle Drive extension project that will see the road connect Highway 97 to Glenmore Road at the UBCO campus, according to a media release.

Planning for the extension has been in works for years. Funding for the project was approved in November 2014.

“This project will ease congestion on Highway 97 and provide an alternative for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists heading to and from UBCO,” Minister of Transportion and Infrastructure Todd Stone says in the release. “Users will have another route to the university without having to travel on Highway 97.”

A multi-use pedestrian and cyclist pathway linking Glenmore Road to the Hollywood Road roundabout at Highway 97 near the university will also be constructed.

Construction for the $11.6 million project — which will be cost shared between the federal government, the province and the City of Kelowna — is expected to start this spring and be completed by spring 2018.
