Canadians travelled abroad more in February; fewer people visited Canada

OTTAWA – Statistics Canada says Canadians took 5.6 million trips abroad in February, up 1.5 per cent from January.

Travel to the United States rose 1.7 per cent in February to 4.9 million trips and trips to destinations other than the United States rose 0.4 per cent to 768,000.

Travel to Canada fell 1.5 per cent in February to 2.1 million trips, as a decrease in travel from the United States offset an increase from overseas.

Just under 1.7 million visitors came to Canada from the United States, down 2.1 per cent from January.

That was the lowest monthly level since February 2011.

Travel to Canada by overseas travellers rose 1.0 per to 391,000 trips, driven by increases from Asian countries, China, Japan, India and South Korea.
