Jacques Demers in stable condition as health improves: hospital
MONTREAL – Sen. Jacques Demers was in stable condition Friday after an improvement in his health following his stroke, said a hospital spokeswoman.
It had improved to the point that doctors were planning to move him out of intensive care and into the inpatient stroke unit, Sandra Sciangula of the McGill University Health Centre said in a statement.
“Senator Demers’ family is at his bedside and they are able to interact with him,” she said. “The family appreciates the extraordinary care deployed by the medical team and thanks the public for the respect demonstrated for their privacy.”
The next medical update is scheduled for Monday afternoon.
Demers, 71, was rushed to hospital Wednesday night.
Demers, who coached the Montreal Canadiens to their 1993 Stanley Cup victory, is a patient of the team’s current doctor, David Mulder.
He resigned from the Conservative caucus in the Senate a few months ago and sits as an Independent.
