Rachel Homan shuts out Chelsea Carey 10-0 at Players’ Championship

TORONTO – Ottawa’s Rachel Homan shut out Scotties Tournament of Hearts champion Chelsea Carey 10-0 on Thursday night in Draw 9 of the Players’ Championship.

Homan advanced to the playoffs of the Grand Slam of Curling tournament with four consecutive round-robin wins.

Homan opened scoring with a deuce in the first and stole one in the second and two in the third to lead 5-0 early. Carey came up light on the draw with her last stone of the fourth end. Homan stole five more points and the teams shook hands early.

Carey was eliminated from contention with an 0-4 record.

Meanwhile, Switzerland’s Alina Paetz scored three sets of deuces and stealing four in the sixth end during a 10-2 rout over Russia’s Anna Sidorova. Both rinks are now 1-2.

Edmonton’s Val Sweeting earned her first win of the tournament with an 8-2 victory over fellow Edmonton’s Kelsey Rocque in six ends. Sweeting sits at 1-2 and Rocque’s record is even at 2-2.

Switzerland’s Silvana Tirinzoni remains undefeated at 3-0 after a 7-4 win over Tracy Fleury of Sudbury, Ont., who fell to 1-3.

On the men’s side, Glenn Howard of Penetanguishene, Ont., beat Sweden’s Niklas Edin 4-3. Both teams are 2-2.
