Chapman hits 400-save milestone as Red Sox beat Orioles 3-1

BALTIMORE (AP) — Aroldis Chapman notched his 400th career save, Eli White hit a three-run homer following an error by Gunnar Henderson and the Boston Red Sox capped a four-game sweep of the Baltimore Orioles with a 3-1 victory Sunday.

Chapman gave up a one-out single in the ninth before striking out Coby Mayo and Christian Encarnacion-Strand to become the ninth player in major league history to record 400 saves. The 38-year-old Chapman earned his first save in 2011 with Cincinnati went on to have 10 seasons with 30 or more, including 33 this season.

Over his lengthy career, Chapman has totaled 24 saves against Baltimore. The lefty got one Friday night that started Boston on its sweep of the sinking Orioles.

Coming off two straight shutout losses, the Orioles used successive two-out doubles by Mayo and Encarnacion-Strand to take a 1-0 lead in the first inning.

In the second, with two outs and a runner on, Henderson failed to make a backhand stab of a grounder to shortstop. White followed with a drive off Kyle Bradish (7-13) that cleared the left-field wall.

Payton Tolle (9-6) struck out 12 over six innings for Boston, allowing four hits and walking none.

REDS 12, BREWERS 8

CINCINNATI (AP) — Elly De La Cruz hit a two-run homer and bases-loaded double and finished with four RBIs as Cincinnati beat NL Central-leading Milwaukee.

The Reds took a series from the Brewers at Great American Ball Park for the first time since 2022, ending Milwaukee’s nine-series streak.

Cincinnati built a 4-0 lead through three innings. In the second, Sal Stewart picked up his MLB-leading 107th RBI with a sacrifice fly.

Christian Yelich drew a walk to open the fourth before Jake Bauers hit his team-leading 24th homer, the first hit of the game for the Brewers. Garrett Mitchell tripled and scored on a throwing error.

De La Cruz, the Reds’ DH, hit his 22nd homer in the fourth, giving the Reds a 6-3 lead.

PIRATES 1, ANGELS 0

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Paul Skenes pitched 5 1/3 scoreless innings for his first win since July 19 and Henry Davis hit a home run to lead Pittsburgh over Los Angeles.

Skenes (10-11) gave up four hits, struck out two and walked one. The 2025 NL Cy Young Award winner had gone seven consecutive outings without a win since beating Cleveland in his first start after the All-Star break.

Gregory Soto, Carmen Mlodzinski, Camilo Doval and Mason Montgomery finished the five-hitter. Montgomery earned his 10th save.

It marked the first time Skenes faced the Angels, the team he grew up rooting for in Orange County.

Davis pulled a home run down the left-field line in the third inning, his ninth of the season, off Walbert Urena (9-10), who was a tough-luck loser while pitching his first career complete game and the Angels’ first of the season.

METS 4, GIANTS 2

NEW YORK (AP) — Bo Bichette launched a go-ahead three-run homer with two outs in the eighth inning after an intentional walk to Juan Soto, and New York rallied for a victory over San Francisco.

Brett Baty opened the inning by hitting his second career pinch-hit homer when his drive off Carson Seymour (0-2) cleared the left-field fence by a few feet. A.J. Ewing followed with a single and was sacrificed to second by Luis Torrens.

After right fielder Jung Hoo Lee made a sliding catch on Francisco Lindor’s sinking liner, the Giants intentionally walked Soto after Seymour threw two pitches out of the strike zone. Bichette then hammered an 0-1 slider into the left-field seats for his 16th homer.

Tobias Myers (1-2) stranded a runner in the eighth for his first win with the Mets after being promoted from Triple-A Syracuse before the game. Kodai Senga pitched a perfect ninth for his sixth save in six chances.

New York starter Christian Scott lasted 4 2/3 innings. The right-hander permitted three of his four hits in the fourth, when the Giants went ahead on Lee’s bloop single that scored two runs.

GUARDIANS 3, TIGERS 2, 10 INNINGS

CLEVELAND (AP) — Daniel Schneemann singled home rookie Angel Genao from third base in the 10th inning to send Cleveland to a win over DetroiT, the Guardians’ third walk-off victory in the four-game series.

With a runner at second, Patrick Bailey opened the 10th with a single off Kyle Finnegan (3-1). Schneemann then ripped a 1-0 pitch into right, triggering another celebration by the Guardians, who are chasing Chicago in the AL Central.

The Guardians didn’t lead at any point in the series until their final swing. Cleveland swept a doubleheader on Friday before being shut out Saturday.

Cade Smith (5-1) pitched two perfect innings, striking out the side in the 10th with an automatic runner at second.

Brayan Rocchio homered for the Guardians, who came in tied with Toronto for the final wild-card spot.

Guardians starter Gavin Williams had another solid outing, allowing two runs and striking out 11 in six innings. It’s the right-hander’s 11th double-digit strikeout game this season — most in the majors.

MARLINS 10, CUBS 3

MIAMI (AP) — Javier Sanoja hit a two-run homer and Heriberto Hernández added a solo shot as Miami beat Chicago.

Cubs slugger Pete Crow-Armstrong hit his 40th homer and joined Philadelphia’s Kyle Schwarber (42) as the only players to reach the mark this season.

Otto Lopez and Jakob Marsee had two hits each for the Marlins, who avoided a sweep of the three-game series.

Miami starter Tyler Phillips (5-6) allowed three runs and five hits over five innings.

The Marlins chased Cubs starter Clay Holmes (2-3) during a five-run fifth that snapped a 3-all tie. Owen Caissie hit a two-run single and Hernández and Joe Mack followed with RBI singles. Griffin Conine put Miami ahead when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Crow-Armstrong’s game-tying drive to lead off the fifth traveled 403 feet. He joined Billy Williams as the only Cubs left-handed hitters to hit 40 or more homers in a season. Williams hit 42 in 1970.

BRAVES 5, PHILLIES 4

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Ronald Acuña Jr. hit a tying three-run homer, Austin Riley added a go-ahead RBI triple and Atlanta used a late rally to defeat Philadelphia, extending its lead in the NL East to five games.

Acuña hit a 100.5-mph fastball off Phillies reliever Alex McFarlane deep into the right field seats in the top of the eighth inning to tie the score 4. It was home run No. 16 this season for Acuña, and it was the seventh consecutive fastball over 100 mph thrown to him by McFarlane.

After getting the first out of the inning, Mike Yastrzemski singled and Drake Baldwin doubled ahead of Acuña’s homer.

McFarlane hadn’t allowed a run since Aug. 11 — the only run he allowed since being called up in July.

In the ninth inning, Ozzie Albies legged out a double off Phillies closer Jhoan Duran (2-5) and Riley followed with a triple off the centerfield fence, giving the Braves the lead.

DIAMONDBACKS 3, ASTROS 2

HOUSTON (AP) — Nolan Arenado hit a two-run homer to lead Arizona to a win over Houston.

Arizona took two of three games this weekend for its first series win in Houston since 2012.

The game was tied with two outs in the third when Arenado’s 22nd home run of the season put the Diamondbacks on top 3-1.

Yordan Alvarez gave the Astros an early lead with his solo shot to right field in the first inning. It’s his 38th homer this season, which is a career high and tied with Tampa Bay’s Junior Caminero for most in the American League.

Eduardo Rodríguez (15-5) allowed just two singles after the homer and struck out six in six innings to help Arizona improve to 8-0 in his last eight road starts.

ROYALS 6, BLUE JAYS 1

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Vinnie Pasquantino and Salvador Perez homered as Kansas City beat Toronto to avoid a three-game sweep.

Toronto (72-72) dropped a game behind Cleveland for the final American League wild card. The Guardians edged Detroit 3-2 in 10 innings.

Randy Dobnak (3-3) allowed one run over six innings for the win. He struck out three and walked none. Three of the four hits he gave up came in his last inning.

Blue Jays starter Spencer Arrighetti (7-9) yielded six runs and five hits in 4 2/3 innings. He walked three and struck out three.

Kansas City went ahead 3-0 before Arrighetti got an out. John Rave beat out an infield single before Bobby Witt Jr. coaxed a walk. Pasquantino then launched a three-run homer.

Witt led off the third with a line-drive double off the wall in left field. One out later, Perez bounced a drive off the top of the fence in nearly the same spot for a two-run homer and a 5-0 cushion.

CARDINALS 10, ROCKIES 8

DENVER (AP) — Iván Herrera had three hits and two RBIs, Cooper Hjerpe threw four perfect innings of relief in his major league debut and St. Louis held on to beat Colorado.

Nolan Gorman added a go-ahead, two-run home run off reliever Jimmy Herget (0-6) to cap a six-run fifth inning for the Cardinals, who took two of three games from Colorado and have won five of their last six road series.

Alec Burleson had three hits and his team-leading 103rd RBI of the season. Leo Bernal drove in two runs for St. Louis. It was the third multi-RBI outing for Bernal in six career MLB games.

Hjerpe (1-0), the 22nd overall pick of the 2022 draft by the Cardinals, was recalled from Triple-A Memphis before Sunday’s game. The 25-year-old left-hander struck out six after relieving starter Kyle Leahy in the third inning.

George Soriano struck out Troy Johnston with a runner on second base in the ninth to earn his third save of the season.

Mickey Moniak hit his 22nd homer of the season and drove in four runs for the Rockies. Jake McCarthy added a homer and three RBIs and TJ Rumfield finished with three hits and an RBI.

PADRES 4, YANKEES 3

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Fernando Tatis Jr., Jake Cronenworth and Manny Machado hit consecutive home runs off Gerrit Cole to open the bottom of the first inning, and San Diego held off New York to take two of three games in their series.

San Diego starter Michael King pitched six shutout innings against his former team. Luis Campusano added a leadoff homer against Cole in the seventh for the Padres, who remained a half-game behind Arizona for the third National League wild card.

The Yankees rallied for three runs off reliever Adrian Morejon in the eighth, highlighted by an RBI double from rookie Spencer Jones, who is from northern San Diego County.

Mason Miller pitched the ninth for his 33rd save, striking out Ben Rice with a runner on first to end it.

The Yankees (81-62) need one more victory to clinch their 34th consecutive winning season. They hold the American League’s top wild-card spot by 2 1/2 games over rival Boston and trail first-place Tampa Bay by four games in the AL East.

The Padres banged the ball all around Petco Park in taking a 3-0 lead on the first 15 pitches from Cole, a Southern California native who gave up three consecutive homers to open a game for the second time in his career. It was the third time he served up three homers in an inning.

Tatis went opposite field to right for his 20th. It was his 19th career leadoff homer and third this season.

MARINERS 2, ATHLETICS 0

SEATTLE (AP) — Bryan Woo struck out nine over eight innings in his longest outing of the season, and Cal Raleigh and J.P. Crawford hit back-to-back RBI singles in the fourth inning to lead Seattle to a victory over the Athletics.

Woo (11-9) gave up one hit and walked two in his only eight-inning start of 2026. He retired the first nine batters of the game before Henry Bolte singled to lead off the fourth inning. Woo didn’t give up a hit the rest of the way. He threw 102 pitches, 73 for strikes.

Woo got all the run support he’d need in the fourth, when the Mariners strung together five consecutive singles off A’s starter Gage Jump (6-9). Dominic Canzone, Julio Rodríguez, Raleigh, Crawford and Josh Naylor recorded base hits, with Canzone and Rodríguez coming around to score.

Mariners closer Andrés Muñoz pitched a perfect ninth for his 25th save of the season.

Jump, who took the loss, finished off the inning by striking out three batters in a row, and A’s reliever Seth Johnson struck out the next four Mariners into the sixth inning for a total of seven consecutive Seattle batters retired by strikeout. Jump allowed two runs on six hits in four innings with seven strikeouts and no walks.

RANGERS 8, RAYS 6

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Jake Burger homered twice and Ezequiel Duran had his 12th game this season with at least three hits as Texas rallied from two four-run deficits to beat Tampa Bay.

The Rangers (71-73) earned a split of the four-game series with the Rays (85-58), who own the American League’s best record. Texas trails by two games in the races for the AL West lead and the league’s final wild card.

With the score tied 5-all in the fifth, Elias Díaz singled off Steven Matz (5-5) to score Burger, and Duran singled off Casey Legumina to bring home Logan O’Hoppe.

The Rays pulled within a run in the seventh, but Corey Seager restored Texas’ two-run lead with a solo homer in the eighth.

Jakob Junis pitched a perfect ninth for his sixth save in seven chances after All-Star closer Jacob Latz worked a scoreless eighth. On Saturday night, Latz was the 10th-inning loser for his first defeat since April 10 after allowing his first home run since June 25.

Trevor Williams (1-0), signed by Texas last Tuesday after being released by Washington on Sunday, pitched two scoreless innings for his first win since May 2025.
