Canadians Benfeito, Filion earn silver in 10-m synchro at diving World Series

WINDSOR, Ont. – Canadian divers Meaghen Benfeito and Roseline Filion earned silver medals in the 10-metre synchronized platform event on Friday at the FINA diving world series.

Pamela Ware of Greenfield Park, Que., and Jennifer Abel of Laval, Que., finished third in the three-metre synchronized springboard while Montreal’s Philippe Gagne and Francois Imbeau-Dulac of Saint-Lazare, Que., took bronze in the men’s three-metre synchro.

Benfeito and Filion totalled 313.71 points after finishing well with a 75.84-scoring back 2 1/2 somersault 1 1/2 twists that sealed their second silver in three World Series meets this spring. China’s Ruolin Chen and Huixiu Liu captured gold with 348.60 points. Great Britain’s Tonia Couch and Lois Toulson posted 310.68 for bronze.

“We had a very solid first three dives,” said Filion. “Our fourth dive was not as good. I completely missed the entry, but our synchro today was good. We proved to everybody that no matter how many ups and downs we go through, we’ll still come out strong and be on the podium. It shows we are still a strong team going into the Olympics.”

Ware and Abel, who were in second place until the final dives, finished with 312.87 points for bronze. China’s Zi He and Han Wang captured gold with 339.90. Italy’s Tania Cagnotto and Francesca Dallape took silver with 313.44.

“Our goal this week was to get our first two dives, our compulsories, closer to the first-place score, which is what we did,” Ware said. “We had 102 points, which is our record for our first two dives. We’re really happy about that.”

Ware and Abel’s best score was 73.50 on their forward 3 1/2 somersaults fourth dive.

Gagne and Imbeau-Dulac put up 414.36 points to earn bronze.

China’s Kai Qin and Yuan Cao (450.69) took gold followed by Ukraine’s Ilya Kvasha and Oleksandr Gorshkovozov (426.42).
