CALGARY – Goldcorp Inc. has confirmed that one worker has died in a rockfall at its Marlin gold mine in Guatemala last week.
The Vancouver-based company said rescuers found the employee’s body on Sunday.
No one else was injured in the accident and Goldcorp said it is co-operating with authorities as an investigation continues.
It said some surface operations resumed Monday while underground operations will slowly be reopened as areas are deemed safe.
In a statement, chief executive David Garofalo extended his prayers and condolences to the employee’s family, friends and co-workers.
The Marlin mine has been a source of controversy over the years, facing strong opposition from some locals as well as accusations of environmental damage and lack of indigenous consultations.
