Only known Sendak mural is installed at Philadelphia library

PHILADELPHIA – The only known mural painted by children’s author Maurice Sendak will be on display at a new public library branch in Philadelphia.

The Philadelphia Inquirer reports (http://bit.ly/213PXbu ) “The Chertoff Mural” will go on public view starting June 11.

The “Where the Wild Things Are” author painted the mural in 1961 for the children of his friends Lionel and Roslyn Chertoff in their New York City apartment.

The mural depicts a white terrier leading a parade of characters including a drummer boy, a bugler, a lion, a girl and a bear.

The Chertoff children donated it to Philadelphia’s Rosenbach Museum and Library in 2008. It’s a subsidiary of the Free Library of Philadelphia.

Sendak died in 2012.
