Scuba diver runs out of air, is thrown against rocks

NAHANT, Mass. – Authorities say a man diving off the coast of Massachusetts died after running out of air and being thrown against the rocks by the current.

The Essex District attorney’s office on Sunday identified the man as 38-year-old Vinicius Vianna, of Danvers.

Police say a woman reported late Saturday afternoon that she was off the coast of East Point in Nahant with two scuba divers and one was unresponsive in the water.

The Nahant Harbormaster vessel was dispatched and pulled both divers on board. They were taken to a hospital, where Vianna was pronounced dead. The other diver, a 42-year-old man from Bedford, was treated for exhaustion.

Authorities say Vianna was an experienced diver.

His death remains under investigation, but foul play is not suspected.
