Troopers say loose trailer hit vehicle, killing driver

VALDOSTA, Ga. – State troopers in south Georgia say a trailer towed by a pickup truck came loose and hit another vehicle, killing the driver.

Georgia State Patrol Cpl. Chris Kelch said in an email that the crash happened about 5:25 p.m. Thursday in Valdosta.

Kelch said a white 1990 Ford pickup towing a grain hauler was rounding a curve when the trailer came loose and hit a white 1996 Dodge Stratus travelling in the opposite direction.

Kelch said the driver of the Dodge Stratus, 58-year-old Gary Cantrell of Valdosta, was killed on impact. A passenger in his vehicle suffered minor injuries.

The Ford pickup was driven by 63-year-old Walter Clayton of Sparks.

Kelch said the investigation is ongoing and charges are pending.
