Global study presented at northern conference finds Arctic Ocean acidifying

An international study released in Norway has found that greenhouse gases are making the Arctic Ocean more acidic.

While that problem affects all the world’s seas, the research says the Arctic Ocean is particularly vulnerable.

It concludes that the Arctic Ocean, including some of its Canadian waters, is likely to be the first of the world’s seas to experience widespread acidification.

The impact of those changes on sea life is so far unknown.

The report has been produced for the Arctic Council, a group of eight nations ringing the North Pole, that meets next week in Sweden.

Canada is to assume chairmanship of the council at that meeting.
