149 years for 2 men in killing of Puerto Rico prosecutor

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – A Puerto Rico judge has sentenced two men to 149 years in prison for killing a prosecutor.

Daniel Vazquez and Rafael Aponte declined to speak before the judge who issued Wednesday’s sentence for 1st degree murder.

Prosecutors say the suspects followed prosecutor Francelis Ortiz home after she left her office at the main court in San Juan late one night in January.

Authorities classified the crime as an attempted carjacking. But her husband, attorney Fermin Luis Arraiza, said he believes she was targeted because of her job. He noted the suspects did not steal her car.

Ortiz and Arraiza have a young daughter.

A third suspect is expected to stand trial soon.
