CARACAS, Venezuela – The life of late President Hugo Chavez is coming to the small screen, much to the displeasure of Venezuela’s socialist leaders who consider themselves guardians of the charismatic leader’s image and of the revolution he initiated.

Sony Pictures Television is calling the Spanish-language series “El Comandante.”

In Caracas, socialist party politicians say the project seeks to damage the memory of the outspoken and controversial Chavez. On Wednesday, party leader Diosdado Cabello said Sony Pictures was acting in behalf of imperialist interests.

Sony did not return requests for comment Thursday.

Chavez led Venezuela from 1999 until his death in 2013. The series comes at a sensitive time for Venezuela, with the economy in shambles and political tension running high as the opposition seeks to unseat Chavez’s hand-picked successor, President Nicolas Maduro.
