Ottawa marks opening of Sheldon Kennedy centre with $350K to help victims
CALGARY – A Calgary agency named after a one-time NHL player who brought to light the sex crimes of former junior hockey coach Graham James has officially opened.
The Sheldon Kennedy Child Advocacy Centre offers all kinds of support services to young abuse victims to save them from having to deal with several different agencies.
Kennedy was one of the first players to come forward about being sexually abused by James.
Kennedy’s revelations led to a conviction against James.
Justice Minister Rob Nicholson represented the federal government at the centre’s opening and announced that Ottawa will provide $350,000 to help young victims and their families.
He said child abuse in all its forms in appalling and has a lifelong impact on its victims.
