3 suspended after drowning at Puerto Rico shelter for kids

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – Three public employees in Puerto Rico have been suspended after a toddler drowned at a government-run home for abused and abandoned children.

San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulin Cruz said Wednesday that the suspension will remain in place until the investigation of the death is completed.

A nearly 2-year-old girl drowned Monday in a plastic pool that authorities said was set up without permission at the Casa Cuna de San Juan amid a heat wave.

Prosecutors are evaluating whether to file negligence charges. Puerto Rico’s Department of Family is conducting its own investigation.
